WITH a hot summer under way, sunseekers will be rushing to get a tan.
Half of Brits said darker skin made them feel healthier, in a poll for Cancer Research UK.
But exposure to harmful UV rays, whether from the sun or a sunbed, is a major risk factor for skin cancer.
In 2006 there were more than 10,400 cases of malignant melanoma – the rarest but most dangerous type of skin cancer which causes 1,800 UK deaths a year.
Radio 1 DJ Edith Bowman, who gives her tips for keeping kids safe on these pages, tells how her sun-loving mum Eleanor suffered breast cancer in 2007 and is now “very cautious” about sun exposure.
Edith says: “Thankfully she has recovered now. She put a stop to the foreign holidays and wears sun cream every day. She’s always telling me to make sure I stay protected – and my little boy Rudy, too.”
